Sing Street to transfer to Broadway this spring
The team behind Sing Street are driving their Off Broadway musical like they stole it — straight to the Great White Way.
The new stage production, based on the John Carney film of the same name, will transfer from its world premiere at New York Theatre Workshop directly to Broadway this spring. Performances will begin at the Lyceum Theatre on March 26, with the official opening night set for April 19.
Directed by Tony winner Rebecca Taichman (Indecent), Sing Street features a book by Enda Walsh, music and lyrics by Gary Clark and John Carney, and choreography by Sonya Tayeh.
Set in Dublin in 1982, the musical follows 16-year-old Conor and his schoolmates, who turn to music to escape the troubles surrounding them at home. In an effort to impress a girl, Conor forms a band. With a score that reflects the New Wave sounds of the era, Sing Street celebrates the thrill of first love and the power of music.
“With Sing Street, the heartbeat of the show are these kids that come from dysfunction and oppression and sadness and defeat trying to find their imagination and trying to find their dreams and trying to escape from all of that heftiness as a kid,” Tayeh previosuly told EW. “What this piece wants is simplicity — seeing the kids build a world, a better one for themselves. Seeing kids come from dysfunction and realize that they don’t have to be like that. They may feel by like byproducts of that, but they can make a different life for themselves, through music and through love.”
Brenock O’Connor will star as Conor, with additional cast including Max Bartos as Darren, Brendan C. Callahan as Gary, Billy Carter as Robert, Zara Devlin as Raphina, Jakeim Hart as Larry, Martin Moran as Brother Baxter, Anne L. Nathan as Sandra, Johnny Newcomb as Barry, Gian Perez as Kevin, Sam Poon as Eamon, Skyler Volpe as Anne, Amy Warren as Penny, offstage cover Ilan Eskenazi, and Anthony Genovesi as Sing Street’s drummer. Many of the cast members are reprising their roles from the Off Broadway production.
“It’s a joy just to be swept along that beautiful sea,” EW’s Christian Holub wrote in his Sing Street review last month.
The Broadway production will be produced by Barbara Broccoli, Brian Carmody, Patrick Milling Smith, Michael Wilson, Orin Wolf, and Frederick Zollo. Executive Producers are Patrick Daly and Alecia Parker. Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning Jan. 14.
