Fans furious over feature added to popular video game series: 'So pathetic'
An upcoming Star Wars add-on coming to The Sims 4 has players convinced that Electronic Arts has joined the dark side.
The Sims 4 Star Wars: Journey to Batuu was unveiled at Gamescom 2020 in a segment about upcoming Star Wars video games. It didn’t seem very different from the many other packs that developer Maxis has put out since 2014 but DLC in particular sparked outrage from Sims fans.
The trailer was slammed right out the gate from commenters criticizing Electronic Arts (the publisher which owns The Sims license and the exclusive right to create Star Wars gaming content) for ignoring player concerns and watering down the Star Wars franchise. At the time of writing this article, the trailer for Journey to Batuu holds the unenviable ratio of 28K likes and 59K dislikes.
A commenter on the trailer referenced how players have been asking for features such as bunk beds, gameplay improvements and the addition of babies as actual Sims characters for years, only for Electronic Arts to announce a Star Wars pack that the community never asked for.
When Digital Spy hosted a user poll in February asking gamers what themed packs they’d most like to see in The Sims 4, Star Wars came in dead last. The top five requests were more reflective of ordinary life such as hotels, school life and farming.
On Reddit, the front pages of both /r/TheSims and /r/TheSims4 have been filled with memes lampooning Electronic Arts and users airing their grievances. One thread pointed out that Electronic Arts added aliens to the game before it added any updated options for Black Sims in the game.
“There are more skin tones for aliens than for black people,” A Redditor wrote. “EA is so pathetic.”
