So when they announced (in a joint statement) that they were breaking up, we were all like, "OMG??!!"
Camila opened up about the breakup to Zane Lowe earlier this month. “My priorities have fluctuated, and my focus has changed throughout my life," she said. "Even now, while I’m in promo mode — honestly, if I’m not having fun, what’s the fucking point? I think as I get older, the priorities shift. And I feel like that was that way for both of us."
And besides his optimistic, beautiful breakup song "It'll Be Okay," we never really heard Shawn's perspective — until this weekend. He posted this behind-the-scenes clip of him talking about post-breakup life at his piano.
"A lot of things that are also, like, resonating in the lyrics to me, it's like, 'Oh, fuck.' You know, you don’t realize, when you’re breaking up with someone, you're thinking that it’s the right thing to do," Shawn said.
"You don’t realize all this shit that comes after. Like, who do I call when I’m in a panic attack? Who do I call when I’m, like, fucking, on the edge?"
"I think that's the reality that kind of hit me," he continued. "It's like, 'Oh, I'm on my own now,'" he said.
"Now, I feel like, finally, I'm actually on my own, and I hate that. That's my reality, you know?"
Shawn has always been vocal about his anxiety and mental health and, most recently, how the pandemic affected it.
"The stillness [of the pandemic] brought a lot of anxiety to the surface that I had to work through, and on the other side of that was a really reflective period for me where I could be like, ‘Oh this is what I’ve been doing. This is crazy,'" he told Zane in 2020. "This is what I can do. This is art. This is bigger than me."
Luckily, Shawn does go to therapy, Camila revealed last year, so he's in good hands. I always love when celebs are super open about their mental health struggles and realities.
Thank you for sharing your reality and perspective — and for always being so open, Shawn. Hang in there, pal!
