  • Shawn Johnson East is explaining her daughter’s “goose egg” bruise after followers flooded her with concerned messages.

  • “Yes, we are aware of her bruise, the athlete wrote. “It’s her first true goose egg.”

  • She and her husband Andrew East are currently expecting their second child.

What tends to come with sharing parenting life on social media, unfortunately, is the scrutiny and judgement of other parents—but Shawn Johnson East isn’t afraid to be candid with her followers.

This week, a good chunk of them had something to say about her 15-month-old daughter, Drew, when they noticed a significantly large, raised bruise on her face. Shawn didn’t realize she needed to address it because you know, clumsy toddlers are often scraped and nicked—but she was evidently mistaken.

“To answer a few burning questions haha... yes, we are aware of her bruise,” the former Olympic gymnast wrote on her April 20 Instagram Story, per E! News. “It’s her first true goose egg,” she explained. “Ran straight into the dining table. Doesn’t realize how tall she is. All is good there. Doc checked.”

This isn’t the first time the athlete has had to defend herself as a parent. In February 2020, she was forced to speak up after several people left hateful comments under a video of Drew’s first assisted “flip.” Shawn insisted that the baby was “perfectly safe,” but that didn’t stop the criticisms from rolling in.

“While she may have been perfectly safe, sometimes you are a bit rough handling such a young baby, and not making her warm enough when you take her out. She needs at least socks if not shoes, as well, and hats,” one person commented.

Shawn replied, tersely: “Are you holding her? Have you physically [felt] her sweat when she wears socks? Or felt her strength when she stands? Or seen her fuss until she stands up because she hates laying down? Nope. You haven’t. I’m her mama. I know.”

The athlete is currently seven months pregnant with her second child, a baby boy, and has admitted that she’s a bit nervous about the new experience.

“I fell in love with being a girl mom. I swore I would never buy something pink. I would never be into the girly stuff, but I am fully immersed,” she recently told SheKnows. “Now I’m getting ready to have a boy, and I don’t know how to do it. It’ll be awesome. I’m so excited, and I think especially with my daughter, she’s a very rough and tough girl, so it’ll be a perfect match.”

In other words, there will be plenty more (innocent) bruises where that came from.
