  • Sharon Stone shared how her life-altering stroke shifted her perspective on Botox.

  • “I had to have over 300 shots of Botox and filler to make the one side of my face come up again,” she explained.

  • Now, she prefers to live Botox-free at 64.

A unique series of events led to how Sharon Stone feels about Botox today. Everyone knows it’s essentially the norm in Hollywood at this point, but Stone chooses to opt out for two reasons: because she wants to age naturally, and because for her, the procedure represents a traumatic moment in her life. In 2001, the actress suffered a brain hemorrhage and stroke that nearly killed her. And Botox was part of her after-care.

“There were periods in the super fame when I got Botox and filler and stuff, and then I had this massive stroke and a nine-day brain hemorrhage and I had to have over 300 shots of Botox and filler to make the one side of my face come up again,” she explained in a new interview with Vogue Australia. So the aesthetic treatment quickly went from a “cute luxury to some kind of massive, painful neurological need,” she said. That’s one, albeit intense, way to shift a perspective.

Now, at 64, the Basic Instinct star is happily embracing life and its gifted face lines. She recently posted a topless bikini photo that prompted people to admire her “bravery” and “boldness,” but she’s simply determined to exist fully and without shame. “I posted it because I feel like women become invisible once we become moms and you’re 45 and people walk by you like you’re not there,” she said.

“I’m comfortable with myself, and I don’t feel personally oppressed,” she continued. “I think I can probably speak for you and the rest of the female planet when I say that there’s a giant effort to make us not feel free and to feel oppressed. And I don’t go for it.”

That’s why, when a recent younger partner asked if she uses Botox, it left a sour taste in her mouth. She responded by saying: “It would probably be really good for your ego and mine if I did,” and the relationship didn’t last much longer. “I saw him one more time after that and then he wasn’t interested in seeing me anymore,” she told Vogue. “If you don’t see me for more than that, you’ll please find your way to the exit.”

Stone sees herself for far more than her looks—she’s way more focused on living. “I feel like this is the most exciting and creative period of my life,” she said. “I feel really, really happy. I’ve never been this joyful.”
