Shania Twain’s apology backfires with commenters

“Never apologize for having your own opinion.” “Everyone is allowed free speech.” Shania Twain’s recent comment about President Trump ignited a backlash on Twitter, but her ensuing apology is what’s bothering Newsroom readers most. In an interview with the Guardian, Canadian singer Shania Twain recently stated that if she were American, she would have voted for Trump. “I would have voted for [Trump] because even though he was offensive, he seemed honest.” Her comment ruffled more than a few feathers among her fans, and Twain went on Twitter to release a lengthy apology: “As a Canadian, I regret answering this unexpected question without giving my response more context. My answer was awkward, but certainly should not be taken as representative of my values nor does it mean I endorse him.” Newsroom readers feel strongly that Twain should not have backpedaled: “What did you say that you feel you need to apologize for?” “You have to apologize for answering a question honestly?” Twitter on the other hand is divided, with some applauding the country singer for apologizing to those who were offended.
