Seton Hall vs. TCU: Complete recap from tough loss in NCAA Tournament first round

New Jersey basketball has already made some serious noise in this NCAA Tournament, but the Seton Hall Pirates could not continue the Garden State surge.

Jersey City school Saint Peter's, with former Seton Hall star Shaheen Holloway at the helm, shocked the world on Thursday night with an upset of No. 2 seed and college basketball royalty Kentucky. However, the Peacocks' neighbor in South Orange were blown out by the TCU Horned Frogs on Friday night.

Holloway: As Shaheen Holloway beats Kentucky, Seton Hall AD who hired him is 'beyond thrilled'

Here is a recap of the action from San Diego.

Game over: TCU 69, Seton Hall 42

A very uncertain offseason now begins for the Pirates.

What is the future of Willard, who has been heavily linked to the vacant Maryland job? Could Shaheen Holloway be an option should Willard leave? What will the roster look like with the loss of so many seniors? Seton Hall will likely have to hit the transfer portal hard to avoid any sort of rebuilding year.

Seton Hall overcame a lot of adversity to get to this point, but it ends with a whimper.

TCU 67, Seton Hall 42: 2:00 left in 2H

It has not been in doubt for quite some time, as Seton Hall never made a push in the second half. The Big 12 will move to 6-0 this NCAA Tournament.

TCU 60, Seton Hall 42: 3:47 left in 2H

Seton Hall has 42 points. We have played over 56 minutes of basketball.

Tough pill to swallow for Pirates fans.

TCU 56, Seton Hall 34: 7:42 left in 2H

Seton Hall goes with a full-court press and a zone to try and create a spark. However, the ball continues to be stagnant offensively and turnovers persist.

Total disaster here for the Pirates.

TCU 50, Seton Hall 28: 11:04 left in 2H

It should be noted that Seton Hall mustered just 57 and 52 points in its two Big East Tournament games. Offense was clearly an issue, but the strong defense hasn't been there tonight.

TCU 50, Seton Hall 26: 12:00 left in 2H

Charge on Rhoden, he is done already and finished with five points. Could be an unfortunate end to a stellar career.

TCU 45, Seton Hall 25: 13:59 left in 2H

Rhoden has checked back in, as it appears Willard recognizes his team is on the ropes. It's going to take a heroic effort from their star senior to get the Pirates back into this one.

Foul trouble also gets more severe as Obiagu picks up his fourth. Seton Hall also down to one timeout.

TCU 39, Seton Hall 25: 15:57 left in 2H

The Horned Frogs are killing the Pirates on back cuts to start this half, and Seton Hall still can't generate any consistent offense.

Seton Hall getting close to the danger zone here.

TCU 37, Seton Hall 23: 16:58 left in 2H

Rhoden picks up his fourth foul on a reach-in, he goes to the bench. Just brutal for the senior.

How long can Willard afford to keep him off of the floor?

On the flip side, Miles is now on the bench with three fouls for TCU.

Second half is underway!

TCU smothered the Pirates in the first half. Can they start making some shots, and can Rhoden stay on the floor long enough to bust out of his own slump? The season depends on it.

Halftime stats leaders

Seton Hall

Richmond: 4 points, 3 steals, 2 rebounds, 2 assists

Cale: 6 points, 2 rebounds

Rhoden: 2 points, 3 rebounds, 3 fouls

Obiagu: 1 points, 3 rebounds, 3 fouls

Jamir Harris: 6 points

TCU

Mike Miles: 10 points, 2 rebounds

Emanuel Miller: 6 points, 2 steals

Francisco Farabello: 3 points, 4 rebounds

Damion Baugh: 4 points, 2 rebounds

Eddie Lampkin: 4 rebounds, 2 assists

Halftime: TCU 30, Seton Hall 21

Back-to-back threes gives Seton Hall some life, but a late TCU bucket still leaves a healthy deficit at halftime. The Pirates are shooting 8-for-29 with nine turnovers.

Between the wrong guys being in foul trouble and the sputtering offense, Seton Hall has quite the hill to climb. We'll see if this late surge carries over to the second half.

Rhoden tries to drive through a crowd, but is called for the charge. He now has three fouls, which is less than ideal.

He Ike Obiagu and Tyrese Samuel are all on the bench with foul trouble.

TCU 24, Seton Hall 15: 3:23 left in 1H

Could that Cale three wake up the Pirates?

Seton Hall is still a mess on offense, while TCU is starting to get come on with looks around the rim.

TCU 22, Seton Hall 11: 5:09 left in 1H

Well, it's clear neither of these teams is going to outscore Arizona on Sunday, in particular Seton Hall. The Pirates have nobody who can break down the TCU defense.

For all of the tight defense being played, the refs are letting the kids play so far. Just 10 fouls between the two sides, although Seton Hall is now in the bonus with six of them.

TCU 16, Seton Hall 11: 7:50 left in 1H

Jared Rhoden desperately needs to get going for Seton Hall.

The team's leading scorer on the season is 1-for-5 so far, with most those looks being contested jumpers. The isolation plays aren't working, need to run some action to get him a clean look.

Meanwhile, the sloppy offensive play continues on both sides. Nine combined turnovers and a lot of bricks.

TCU 12, Seton Hall 11: 9:21 left in 1H

Three-point shooting is not a strength of Seton Hall, yet the Pirates have taken 6 of them so far tonight. They've hit just one.

The Pirates need to focus on getting ball down low, either with post-ups or driving off of screens. This has been their only successful offense so far.

TCU 8, Seton Hall 4: 11:55 left in 1H

Both squads looks totally overmatched offensively so far. And when either team does get an open look, nothing is falling.

Not that this is unexpected. TCU ranked second to last in the Big 12 in scoring at 68 points per game this season. Seton Hall scores 73 points per game, but have struggled since losing Aiken in January.

Tough sledding thus.

Seton Hall 4, TCU 4: 14:59 left in 1H

Speaking of Richmond, he looks fine to start as he steals TCU's opening possession and slams it at the other end for the first points of the night. He has a pair of steals already.

Otherwise, offense has certainly been hard to come by. Both defenses are really flying around to start, already seven combined turnovers in the first five minutes.

This one could be a grind.

We are off!

After a roller coaster season, Seton Hall is at the Big Dance. Can they extend its season into the weekend? Here we go!

Kadary Richmond ready to go

With Bryce Aiken still out of the lineup, de facto point guard Kadary Richmond remains in the starting lineup for the Pirates despite an ailing thumb.

Coach Kevin Willard noted this week that Richmond is feeling much better, which will be key for Seton Hall tonight. We shall see.

Tip-off set for approx. 10 p.m. ET

The Pirates and Horned Frogs will get underway roughly 30 minutes after Arizona's game with Wright State.

With the No. 1 seed Wildcats taking care of business, they will take on the winner of our game.
