In a Series of Emotional Tweets, Miley Cyrus Reveals the Real Reason She and Liam Hemsworth Split

It’s been a hard week for Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. After an intimate wedding last winter and eight months of marriage, the couple announced their separation last week to the shock of fans everywhere. But things took a turn when intimate vacation photos of Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter surfaced online following the couple’s decision to split. Salacious tabloid headlines and the celebrity rumor mill spun out of control soon after, with some jumping to the (apparently incorrect) conclusion that the couple’s separation was caused by Cyrus cheating on Hemsworth.

The musician took to Twitter today with a series of honest and vulnerable tweets to set the record straight. “I accept that the life I’ve chosen means I must live completely open and transparent...what I cannot accept is being told I’m lying to cover up a crime I haven’t committed,” began the first of 11 tweets.

Cyrus then goes on to recall some of her biggest mistakes from having spent her adolescence in the public eye, such as losing out on a major merchandising deal as a teenager and having “fucked up and cheated” in past relationships. But Cyrus’s point isn’t to wallow in the past, and she refuses dish out blame—on herself or anyone else—for her split with Hemsworth. The truth is much simpler: “The bottom line is, I HAVE GROWN UP,” reads Cyrus’s tweet.

“At this point I had to make a healthy decision for myself to leave a previous life behind,” Cyrus explains later in the thread. “You can say I am a twerking, pot-smoking, foul-mouthed hillbilly, but I am not a liar.”

Leave it to Cyrus to get the last, well-spoken word. Maybe now the tabloids and rumor mill will leave Cyrus and Hemsworth in peace to process an undeniably difficult time—and stop undermining Cyrus’s sexuality and agency as a grown woman while they’re at it.
