Sergio Hudson RTW Spring 2021

Coming off the one-two punch of dressing former First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris for the Joe Biden Inauguration Day and night events, Los Angeles designer Sergio Hudson is getting back to business, releasing the spring 2021 collection that got derailed at the end of last year for pre-order now on his website (and preparing to launch fall 2021 in a couple of weeks).

The look: Boss lady power tailoring from a master of monochrome.

Quote of note: “I was born in 1984 and was a child of the ’90s, obsessed with powerful working women, so I imagined Heather Locklear from [TV series] ‘Melrose Place’ and Robin Givens from [the 1992 film] ‘Boomerang’ as my dream women to dress this season,” Hudson said. “I thought about what these women would want to wear if they had to run their companies from home,” he said, nodding to the pandemic at-home reality.

Standout pieces: A sunny yellow faux wrap pant with the look of a polished sarong, worn with a matching mohair cropped sweater as cozy new suit; a tangerine minidress with sexy waist cutout and covered button details; a tailored white double-breasted blazer jumpsuit with sculpted shoulders.

Takeaway: It’s time for Hudson’s tailoring chops and vivid color sense to be recognized with a major retail partnership.
