Red Carpet Pajamas Are Totally a Thing & Serena Williams Knows It

Serena Williams knows how to celebrate. When you win as often as this tennis star does, it’s almost a job requirement. So for the New York City ceremony in her honor for landing the Sports Illustrated “Sportsperson of the Year” title over a horse, she dressed for the spotlight.

Following a year filled with highs (Serena Slam! Drake!), lows (the U.S. Open loss, the New York Times body-shaming her, and a rumored breakup with Drake), she wore what wanted, critics be damned, to the event celebrating her epic 2015: A lace outfit similar to the one she’s wearing on the cover of the magazine. “I’ve had people look down on me, put me down because I didn’t look like them — I look stronger,” she admitted in her acceptance speech. “I’ve had people look past me because the color of my skin, I’ve had people overlook me because I was a woman, I’ve had critics say I [would] never win another Grand Slam when I was only at No. 7 — and here I stand today, with 21 Grand Slam titles, and I’m still going.”

But while Serena got social media hate for the lace bodysuit she wears for the publication and some backlash on the red carpet as well, she’s not the only star to wear lingerie in a setting outside the home. Rihanna is the trend’s biggest advocate, wearing silk sets and teddies on the street and to fancy fashion events; Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore two slip dresses in two days; Marc Jacobs, Sofia Coppola, and Grace Coddington all wore PJs to the Met Gala — and there are so many more. It’s a pajama party all day, everyday!
