Serena Williams Is Playing the 2020 U.S. Open

Serena Williams confirmed she will compete in the 2020 U.S. Open, just after news broke that the tennis championship would indeed be happening this year.

"So this announcement has been on my mind all day, but ultimately I really cannot wait to return in New York and play the U.S. Open 2020," she said in a video shared on U.S. Open's Twitter account. "I feel like the USTA is going to do a really good job of ensuring everything is amazing and everything is perfect and everyone is safe. It’s going to be exciting. It’s been over six months since a lot of us have played professional tennis."

Earlier this week, it was reported the U.S. Open would take place as it is scheduled every year, following questions about the event in light of the coronavirus pandemic. The championship will run as originally scheduled from Aug. 31 to Sept. 13, but without spectators, and with players being subject to frequent coronavirus testing.

"I’ll certainly miss the fans, don’t get me wrong, just being out there and that New York crowd and hear everyone cheer," Williams said in her video. "I'll really miss that getting me through some of those tough matches. This is crazy. I'm excited."
