Senator Kyrsten Sinema Wore a Pink Wig to Make a Statement in Senate

Pink hair has proven to be quite popular over the course of our nearly nationwide stay-home efforts. With extra time indoors and nowhere in particular to be, celebrities and everyday folks alike have been ordering pink hair dyes and color-depositing conditioners and using this unusual opportunity to experiment away from the salon. U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema is experimenting with pink hair, too, but not exactly in the same way.

When Senate reconvened on Monday, May 5, the democrat senior senator serving Arizona wore a mask like many of her colleagues — an increasingly common and encouraged practice as a means to prevent the spread of coronavirus in addition to social distancing when in public. However, unlike other senators, Sinema donned an additional accessory: a shiny pink wig.

Footage of Sinema shows her walking onto the Senate floor to identify herself, wearing a green dress, face coverage, a purply-pink bob hairstyle — her usual glasses being one of the only ways to recognize her. According to Phoenix-area reporter Brahm Resnik, Sinema's office said the senator was setting an example of social distancing from hair salons by wearing a $13 wig.

Although it hasn't been confirmed, it seems Sinema may be encouraging people to try hairstyles that don't require visiting a salon — like fun wigs — even though they are starting to reopen in states like hers (Arizona is allowing them to start up business again on Friday, May 8). Sinema had also tweeted on Monday, "Social distancing is critical to saving lives and keeping Arizonans healthy. Please continue to stay home as much as possible, and maintain at least 6 feet from others in public," which is not possible at when someone is doing your hair at a salon.
