When it comes to Senator Kamala Harris's fashion sense, her style has become synonymous with her love of a classic American shoe: Converse's lace-up Chuck Taylor sneaker.

In a new interview as part of Complex's Sneaker Shopping series, the Democratic vice presidential nominee opens up about why the vintage basketball shoe has become such a staple within her wardrobe. Though she has experimented with other footwear on the campaign trail, including classic heeled pumps and culturally beloved Timberland boots, her black Converse have been mainstays.

"I love my Chucks … you know, I think it's maybe people don't expect it, but also it's a statement about who we really are. Everybody has their inner kind of Chuck look," said the senator during her chat with Complex's Joe La Puma. "I also think it has to do with the fact we all wanna go back to some basic stuff about who we are as a country. Chucks—whatever your background is, whatever language your grandmother spoke—you know, we all at some point or another had our Chucks."

While speaking at the Social Status streetwear boutique in Charlotte, North Carolina, last week, Harris was introduced to a style of the classic Chucks redesigned by artist Nina Chanel and inspired by her historical run for office. In Complex's video, Harris reunites with the shop's owner, James Whitner, to talk about the canvas kicks, emblazoned with vibrant artwork and the year 2020 followed by a hand-drawn heart.

"Everything is on the line in 2020, and instead of hatin' the situation, I love how she has a heart here," said Harris, pointing to the newly designed sneakers and sharing that the nation needs to continue to have a positive outlook as we head into 2021. "Let's just understand that motivated by love, we can actually act and change what needs to get done."
