'Selling Sunset's' Amanza Says The Drama With Heather Was 'Even Worse' In Real Life

Not everything on reality television is what it seems. Sometimes, it’s much more dramatic.

One of the most heated arguments on season two of Netflix’s Selling Sunset involved Heather Rae Young, realtor at The Oppenheim Group and season one vet, and Amanza Smith, the company’s newest agent. When Amanza spoke with Women's Health about what to expect of the show’s third season, she also revealed that some of last season’s drama looked tamer on screen than it was.

"We film for so many hours that so much stuff gets cut. There was a scene where Heather and I got into it in the office and that was totally…you know," Amanza trails off. "It was my first day of working in the office with everyone as an agent. And was like, 'I’m joining the cast. I’ve known most of the people for years. I’m the cool mom Amanza. No drama.' And I literally made this comment, and then was like surrounded by cameras and I was in my head going: 'Okay, stop the train. How did this happen?' It was actually even worse than it played out on the show."

The comment Amanza's referring to is the one she made about Heather’s relationship with boyfriend Tarek El Moussa (yeah, the guy from HGTV). Season two was off to a smooth-ish start for a hot two seconds or so, when Heather told the other realtors that she’d been spending time with her new boyfriend’s kids and texting Tarek’s ex-wife.

Amanza, who shares two children with ex-husband Ralph Brown, made a comment about how great it is that Heather’s running things that concern the kids by Tarek’s ex. But when she mentioned how soon it was for Heather to be spending so much time with Tarek’s children considering how fresh their relationship was, the mood shifted.

"It terrifies me how fast you have met those kids. Because when and if something doesn’t work out, their hearts are crushed," Amanza said.

Heather wasn't here for it. "'When and if' is not going to happen. It’s going to work out. We are very serious and, you know, we’re, like, going to move in together and moving forward with everything."

After some back and forth, Amanza explained that she wasn't trying to "bash" Heather’s relationship. All she’s doing is sharing that she just went through a breakup with kids and "it [sucked]. It’s like the hardest, most heartbreaking thing." If she’d known Heather was going to get this upset over it, she wouldn’t have spoken up at all.

At the time, Amanza had recently broken up with her boyfriend of almost five years, Taye Diggs, which was tough on her children. So, hearing that Heather was spending time with Tarek’s children after about a month of dating caught her attention, she tells Women's Health. "I was dealing with that, you know, my own mom guilt or whatever comes from that, and so I gave an unsolicited bit of advice and it just came back and bit me in the butt," she says.

Amanza jokes she might have seen the drama coming though. "[Heather’s] got these big beautiful dimples and, like, she can’t ever look mad," Amanza said. But when she spoke up that day at the office, Heather’s dimples vanished. "That’s when I was like, 'She’s really upset with me.'"

These days, Amanza says she and Heather are in a good place. "I wished her a happy Mother’s Day, and we talk about mom stuff. [Heather and Tarek] now have been together for over a year, and they’re totally happy, and we look that couple like, 'Wow, that’s the relationship that I want to have one day too,'" she adds.

"I tell people when you join The Oppenheim Group, we’re a family. Mary, Brett, and I have known each other for 20 years," Amanza concludes. "So, even though she didn’t ask for my opinion, it’s a small office and you just have to kind of expect that we’re all going to look out for one another, and you’re going to hear advice. It’s like having a bunch of brothers and sisters, and sometimes, you give advice that maybe they don’t want to hear."
