With Netflix's new show Selena: The Series, fans of Selena Quintanilla will get another look at the singer's life, and non-fans will get a family drama and an introduction to the music icon. The show will include Selena's childhood, her rise to stardom, and her relationship with her siblings and parents. The show will also feature Selena's husband Chris Pérez, who was also the guitarist in her band, Selena y los Dinos.

If you're curious to know more about what the real Pérez is up to today and how he feels about the show, read on.

Is he involved in the new series?

Selena's sister, Suzette Quintanilla, and her father, Abraham Quintanilla, serve as executive producers on Selena: The Series, but Pérez is not involved. In April, he wrote on Instagram, "Here is a pic I just saw of the actor playing me in the Netflix series. For the record, never met him, haven't seen the script, and I have NO idea what is going on.....but, I'd love to find out 🧐🧐." Those emoji speak volumes.

More recently, Pérez said that he wasn't consulted for the show, but explained that he doesn't have much more to tell, anyway. "I’m not trying to not be a part of anything," he told the Austin American-Statesman. "At the end of the day, we all have our perspective on certain things and how things happened. I've put out everything I wanted to put out already. There’s not much more I want to say, and that’s the God-honest truth."

How does he feel about the show?

Pérez isn't against the existence of the new show. He posted a supportive message about Selena's family and about the band on Instagram on the day before the premiere. "I will forever respect the band and the people involved in it. I hope you guys enjoy this series," he concluded.

Pérez's relationship with Selena's family hasn't always been smooth sailing. As noted in a 2019 interview with the Houston Chronicle, there was a lawsuit against Pérez from Selena's father when Pérez was shopping around his 2012 book To Selena, With Love for TV adaptation. Pérez also claimed in the interview that the family made it difficult for him to attend the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony for Selena in 2017. "Technically, I was invited via email. But I didn't feel very welcome, and her family didn't make it easy." He said there were "hoops ... to jump through" in order to attend. "But I don't want people talking about her family. I might feel a certain way about it, but what would Selena want? I'm not the one wanting to fight."

In his interview with the Austin American-Statesman, Pérez said he wasn't sure if he would check out the Netflix show. "It's a touchy thing for me, and I'm sure her family feels the same way," the 51-year-old musician said. "There's going to be some difficult moments, and not having seen the script, I don't want to be caught off guard. I know for a fact that the story I know is inspiring, having been told by Selena herself."

What is he up to these days?

Pérez has his own band called the Chris Pérez Band—they won the Grammy for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album in 1999—and he plays guitar for other artists. He recently collaborated with country singer Robert Ray on a song called "Think About You."

In addition to his music, last year Pérez launched his own hot sauce, Pérez Pepper Sauce. As fans will remember, in the Selena movie starring Jennifer Lopez, his character (played by Jon Seda) loves hot sauce so much he has a hot sauce holster.

After Selena's 1995 death, Pérez went on to marry a woman named Vanessa Villanueva in 2001. They had two children together, and got divorced in 2008.

While Pérez isn't involved with Selena: The Series, it's clear that he still has love and support for the music he, Selena, and her family made together. And you can watch the show knowing that he's not entirely against the whole thing, either. They just better mention this love of hot sauce. Not bringing that up is inexcusable.
