Selena Gomez underwent a kidney transplant in 2017.
Due to complications with the initial procedure, Selena had to have an emergency follow-up because the kidney was turning inside her body.
Selena just showed off her scar from the second procedure in an empowering Instagram post.
Selena Gomez underwent two terrifying but life-saving kidney transplant procedures in 2017, and she just showed off one of her scars in a beautifully empowering Instagram post.
When Selena first told her fans that she received a kidney transplant thanks to her BFF Francia Raísa, she posted photos of them laying in their hospital beds along with a glimpse at the scar that extended across her stomach. But she rarely shows off the one on her inner thigh, which is from the emergency follow-up procedure that she had to have when she woke up from the transplant and discovered that her new kidney was turning around.
On her Instagram today, Selena opened up about how she's come to accept and embrace the scar on her leg. She wrote, "When I got my kidney transplant, I remember it being very difficult at first showing my scar. I didn’t want it to be in photos, so I wore things that would cover it up."
I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. The Rare Beauty founder continued, "Now, more than ever, I feel confident in who I am and what I went through...and I’m proud of that." And as she congratulated Theresa Marie Mingus on creating the La'Mariette swimsuit line, which has styles that range from XS to XXL, Selena said she loves their message that "all bodies are beautiful."
