In a sit-down interview with Apple TV+ host Zayn Lowe, the singer, actor, and mental health advocate spoke about where she plans to go from here. During their chat, Lowe pointed out that Gomez’s most popular song, presumably “Lose You to Love Me,” is also her “most honest.” He continued, “So now that you are really in a place where you understand your truth better than ever and have the courage to share it, we’re waiting for that album of your career.”
“No pressure,” Gomez joked, though she did admit she was working on it. “If I’m being completely honest, which I have been, it’s been really difficult. I’m really used to going into a setting with the same people in my circle and just banging out music,” Gomez explained. “I’m now telling stories that people don’t know. People I’ve dated that people don’t know, experiences I’ve had that people don’t know. I created this whole private life that was just mine. And I feel like now I have to tell these stories. And people are gonna ask a lot of questions.”
During the documentary, fans got to witness Gomez’s struggle to separate herself from her highly publicized relationship with her now ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, at one point tearfully asking, “When am I just gonna be good enough by myself? Not needing anybody to be associated with?”
Now, Selena Gomez feels she’s in a place where she can share the rest of her story on her own terms…when the time comes. “I feel like I’ve earned it and I just don’t want to release anything that’s not perfect,” she told Lowe. “It’s getting there, is all I can say. It’s getting there.”
