Now that Selena Gomez’s hair is super long again, she hasn’t wasted any time doing the most with it. Did you see that incredible two-tone braid she wore in her new “Look at Her Now” music video? But braids aren’t always the end result — sometimes they’re the means to getting gorgeous waves, which is exactly what Gomez attempted to do on her Instagram Stories. (If you ask her, she didn’t succeed.)
On Saturday, Gomez started recording video almost as soon as she woke up, nothing that her grandparents were staying with her. “I had to put the pretty filter on ’cause I’m lookin’ rough,” Gomez says while using Instagram’s Golden Hour filter, which warms, softens, and adds virtual eyelashes. But it doesn’t do much to hide that Gomez has a huge, messy, loose braid flopping to one side, barely held in place by a blue scrunchie. As her Papa films her, she explains why her hair is in the state it’s in.
“What I was trying to say is that I saw this online, where you’re supposed to flip your hair and braid it, and then it’s supposed to come out, like, amazing,” Gomez says, acting out the motions of flipping over and braiding it while her head is upside down. “So, let’s see.”
Gomez flips her hair upside down again to undo the braid, but before the viewer can even see the results, she has already typed “Smh 🤦🏻♀️” to indicate that she’s not impressed. She flips back over to reveal what looks like quite lovely beachy waves, asking her Papa, “How does it look?” His response? “Nope.”
In the next front-facing shot, Gomez laments the hack, saying, “Man, girls be lyin’, sayin’ do it yourself, it’s so easy, it’s so pretty.” She then makes an incredulous face before saying, “No.”
Although it really doesn’t look bad at all — it’s actually quite pretty — we can understand Gomez might have been disappointed if she used YouTuber Shonagh Scott’s tutorial from earlier this year as guidance; Scott’s outcome looked noticeably wavier. But there’s no telling if Gomez went through every one of Scott’s steps, which started with applying certain products like IGK’s Thirsty Girl Coconut Milk Leave-In Conditioner on wet hair and using a blow-dryer to get her hair 90% dry before flipping upside down to create the braid.
If you’d like to give it a try yourself to see if you like the outcome more than Gomez did, you can watch it below.
