Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff: When Young Female Stars Get Sexed Up for the Public

Last week, Selena Gomez sent temperatures rising when she Instagrammed the provocative cover of her upcoming sophomore album Revival. It features an almost NSFW Gomez seducing the camera — a more than apt companion piece to the record’s saucy lead single “Good For You,” whose lyrics include: “Let me show you how proud I am to be yours, Leave this dress a mess on the floor”. The Internet’s reaction to the nude image was largely positive, proving that the former Disney starlet’s ongoing transition into womanhood has been a smooth one.

But that isn’t always the case.

The prospect of transitioning from a child star to a fully bloomed adult star is a tricky one, and it needs to be finessed. Most young women seem to think the quickest route to making that transition is by flaunting their burgeoning sexuality, a transparent stunt with the potential to backfire, especially when it’s attempted at too young an age. Audiences can be left feeling queasy. (Of course, older females suffer the reverse discrimination when they try to act or dress in a younger, perhaps more provocative fashion.) Gomez is now 23, so her leap feels natural. Unfortunately for many of her former teen star counterparts, that hasn’t always been the case.
