Selena Gomez Calls Francia Raisa Her “Best Friend” Following Alleged Friendship Drama

Selena Gomez is reflecting on the kidney transplant she received in 2017 for lupus-related organ damage and expressing gratitude to her close friend who saved her life.

In the latest episode of Apple TV+’s Dear…, Selena called actress Francia Raisa, her donor, her “best friend” and praised her for her selflessness. “My best friend, her name is Francia, she said, ‘No, I’m absolutely getting tested,’” Selena shared in the episode. “So within three days, she went to go do it and she was a match.”

“It was one of those moments where I felt watched over,” Sel continued. “I know I was so, so, so lucky. I understand that that doesn’t happen for a lot of people, and I know the outcome of some of those situations and how serious they are. So I do not take it lightly that it’s happened to me that way… I will never ever, ever be more in debt to a person than Francia.”

As seen in a throwback clip from the 2017 Billboard Women in Music Awards, when Francia presented Selena with the Woman of the Year Award, the Only Murders in the Building Star was overcome with emotion towards her friend. “To be honest, I think Francia should be getting this award because she saved my life,” she said at the time.

Back in 2017, when Selena and Francia underwent kidney transplant surgery, Sel praised her friend in a post on Instagram. “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa,” she wrote in the caption. “She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”

“The idea of someone not even second-guessing to be a donor was unbelievably overwhelming,” Selena continued in Dear…. The multihyphenate then shared that she and Francia have matching tattoos together, a stamp of the date of the kidney transplant.

Selena and Francia have been close friends for years, but their friendship seemed to hit a rough patch in November 2022, when Sel called Taylor Swift her “only real friend in the industry.” When E! News posted a graphic of Selena’s quote on Instagram, Francia reportedly commented, “Interesting.”

Rumors of a feud continued when Selena weighed in on a TikTok about the drama. “Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know,” she wrote. Neither Selena nor Francia has commented on the rift since.
