From Town & Country

While the Emmy Awards are generally a joyous affair, it is hard to watch tonight's (virtual) broadcast without considering its bittersweet tone. Namely, that the award show is occurring in the midst of a pandemic and directly after the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Justice Ginsburg passed away on Friday, due to complications from metastatic pancreas cancer. Ginsburg's death has resulted in a number of tributes, and the celebrity ones were in full force at the Emmy Awards. Indeed, the feminist and political icon has been an inspiration to many, and her loss is clearly palpable.

Maya Rudolph

First, actress and comedian Maya Rudolph garnered two Creative Arts Emmy Awards earlier this weekend for her performances on "Saturday Night Live" and in "Big Mouth." Rudolph also received a nomination for her guest role as a judge on "The Good Place." She noted that the role was inspired by Ginsburg herself.

"I was actually thinking about The Good Place a lot and about how we modeled her robe after Ruth Bader Ginsberg and how much of that was an homage to an iconic human being," Rudolph said. "When you think of a judge, when you think of all-knowing, when you think of powerful, when you think of all good, yeah, we modeled her robe after RBG, so that was pretty cool."

Regina King

During tonight's primetime broadcast, Regina King won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role in "Watchmen." During her acceptance speech, she implored the audience to register to vote and make a voting plan. Under her fuchsia suit, the actress wore a shirt bearing the image of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman and victim of police brutality. King concluded her short address simply with, "Rest in power, RBG," referring to the late justice.

In Memoriam

Prior to the show's annual "In Memoriam" tribute, host Jimmy Kimmel spoke about Ginsburg's passing. "On Friday, we lost a great American. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a passionate and tireless champion of equality and justice whose legacy was to make life a little better for people less fortunate than she," Kimmel said. "Sounds like pretty good words to live by to me."
