With a global pandemic upheaving the 2020 movie release schedule, sprawling, big-budget, visually stunning feature films have been missing from theaters and home screens alike. But as the year progresses and social distancing measure begin to ease, action-packed releases lie ahead, such as a new James Bond installment and superhero flicks Black Widow and Wonder Woman 1984. And then, of course, there's Dune.
Director Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival) is adapting Frank Herbert's famous 1965 sci-fi novel into a full-out space epic with an all-star cast. Everyone's boyfriend Timothée Chalamet takes the lead as young antihero Paul Atreides, while Zendaya stars opposite as his mysterious love interest Chani. Oscaar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson play Paul's parents, Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa play his trainers in combat. Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgård, and Charlotte Rampling are also in the roster.
Months ahead of the adaptation's December 18 release, the film's first trailer debuted today following a Q&A with the cast and moderator Stephen Colbert. "There is a metaphor, and I think a lesson in this movie for everyone," Chalamet said in the interview. In both the book and screen version, Paul and his family take over the desert planet of Arrakis and face a war with the rival aristocratic family, The Harkonnens, over a valuable spice.
Noting the film's themes of change and adaptation, Villeneuve said that Dune is now "more relevant than ever." Watch the full trailer for Dune above.
