See the stats: Maluma’s staggering success

    Entertainment News•April 11, 2018

Colombian singer Maluma has been compared with Justin Bieber in part because, like Biebs, he scored a record deal as a teenager. But the 24-year-old is making his own mark: “I like to say my genre is the Maluma genre,” he told Rolling Stone. “I don’t want people to know me as a reggaeton star. I want them to know me as Maluma, the star.”

Juan Luis Londoño Arias, known internationally as Maluma (the name is a combination of the first two letters of the names of his mom, Marlli; his dad, Luis; and his sister, Manuela) had an incredible 2017. Four of his videos, combined, reached more than a billion views on YouTube — more than any other Spanish-speaking artist. In the English-language market, only Bieber, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, and Nicki Minaj have those kinds of massive numbers.

Rolling Stone has dubbed him “Latin pop’s next crossover star.” He’s already an honorary member of the club, making music with crossover sensations like Shakira, Ricky Martin, and Marc Anthony. The megahit “Chantaje” with Shakira earned the pretty boy/dirty boy three Latin Grammy nominations.

His social media following is explosive, especially on Instagram. Last year, he was No. 5 on the list of most-viewed Instagram Story posts for a public figure — impressive! Maybe it’s Maluma’s sense of style that has fans double-tapping? Adding to his bragging rights, Maluma walked the runway and performed at Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall 2018 menswear show in Milan.

His success just keeps growing, as his fourth album made Rolling Stone’s list of most anticipated albums of 2018. He says F.A.M.E. (faith, soul, music, and essence) will have a Spanglish vibe; predictions are it will top the charts. He’s also teaming up with Coca-Cola to be a part of its official song for this summer’s World Cup.

“This is what I was born for. I think I’m just starting my career right now.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Calls Out CNN Over Hiring Ex-Jeff Sessions Spokeswoman

Gnosis: Some of the organizations helping to promote the Green New Deal have ties to financing from billionaire George Soros and trace their roots to such radical groups as Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter. Earlier this month, Ocasio-Cortez posted an 11-page Google document in the form of a nonbinding legislative resolution that has become the most authoritative version of the Green New Deal, a broad outline for the current conception of the socialist-style plan. The utopian deal demands 100 percent of all buildings in the U.S. convert to clean energy, calls for the removal of all greenhouse gases from the entire atmosphere, and includes such non-“green” clauses as a federal jobs guarantee while protecting the right of all workers to organize and unionize. It also pledges “affordable, safe and adequate housing” for “all people of the United States.” The Green New Deal was crafted by Ocasio-Cortez along with three groups — the Sunrise Movement, Justice Democrats and a group calling itself New Consensus. The New Yorker reported: The document was written over a single December weekend by the staff of the freshman representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and three like-minded progressive groups, none of which existed two years ago: the Sunrise Movement, a grassroots climate organization; the Justice Democrats, which recruits and supports progressive candidates; and an upstart policy shop called the New Consensus. Besides helping to write the deal text, the Sunrise Movement has been the central progressive organization lobbying the Democratic Party to implement the Green New Deal. Sunrise markets itself as an “army of young people” seeking to “make climate change an urgent priority across America, end the corrupting influence of fossil fuel executives on our politics, and elect leaders who stand up for the health and wellbeing of all people.” Sunrise co-founder Varshini Prakash described his organization’s expansive goals for 2020: “We, along with our partners, are going to be attempting to build the largest youth political force this country has ever seen.” Markey invited Prakash to be his guest at President Trump’s State of the Union address two weeks ago. Sunrise was in part inspired by the activism of Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter and the radical immigration group United We Dream.
