We’ve been waiting patiently for the first look at Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn in the Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux ever since we first learned that she would be taking over from Margot Robbie, who played the role so spectacularly in Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021). Lady Gaga As Harley Quinn In 'Joker: Folie à Deux'

The newly-released pictures show the House of Gucci actress in her hair, makeup, and costume, which was reportedly the work of Oscar-nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips. The costume consists of a red jacket and diamond-print blouse – unmistakable Harley Quinn attire, we think you'll agree! – teamed with a dark-colored mini skirt and black diamond tights.

In one of the pictures, the A Star is Born actress's hair appears to be styled in a wet look, which could be her normal look or it could be a hint to something which happens in the movie previously, while she also appears to be wearing subtle clown makeup on her face in all the pictures.

Another picture sees Gotham police escorting Gaga’s character into a government building with a big crowd in attendance. There also appear to be protesters, some of whom are wearing multicolored clown wigs and clown masks, who are holding signs saying things like, "Free Joker," "Justice 4 Joker," "Joker Marry Me," and "No Justice Not Guilty Not Joking." We cannot contain our excitement for this movie, which is slated for release on October 9th, 2024.

Margot Robbie Vs Lady Gaga As Harley Quinn

Fans have immediately noticed that there's a stark contrast between Gaga and Robbie's characters; so what are some of the differences between Margot Robbie and Lady Gaga's characters? First of all, the movies themselves are totally different in the way that the Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, who plays the Joker, movie is actually being described as a musical, which is a brand new take entirely; but let's talk more about their actual looks.

In terms of makeup, Margot's Harley appeared to be more fun and playful and she sported a super-pale face, contrasted with bright red lipstick and a black heart drawn on her cheek. And who can forget the hair, which was platinum blonde, blue, and pink, while her outfits were always bright and colorful.

On the other hand, at first glance, Gaga’s Harley seems to be more subtle and mature, which fits with the rest of the costumes and the overall theme of the first Joker movie. Although her makeup is unmistakably Harley Quinn due to the black diamonds over her eyes, the red lipstick is a little more understated than Margot's much more vibrant hue. We like how both actresses have been styled so differently, yet the character is still unmistakable!

Twitter Reactions To Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn

Twitter was divided, as some fans couldn’t quite contain their excitement after seeing the first look pictures, while others were a little more conflicted. And let's not forget the other fans who deemed the 32-year-old I, Tonya actress their one and *only* Harley Quinn! "I love LadyGG personally but I think this role was taken by Margot RB already and it’s insanely dope so I think this will somehow disappoint me," one Margot fan wrote on Twitter. "Margot Robbie will always be the better Harley," said another Margot fan, which another agreed with, saying Lady Gaga was "the downgrade from Margot Robbie." Another said: "This is a very underwhelming outfit for both lady gaga and Harley."

Many others came to Gaga and the costume's defense, pointing out the stark differences in the tone of their two movies. "Y'all Margot Robbie just would not work for this movie," explained one fan, adding, "Joker (compared to Suicide Squad) is just so much more serious and dark and he’s also older. Margot Robbie makes an amazing youthful and playful Harley but it just wouldn’t work for this movie I think." Another fan agreed, adding: "Phoenix’s Joker had a different look from the comics, yet it fit in perfectly with the story Todd Phillips wrote/directed. Gaga’s costume looks like a continuation of the same aesthetic established in the first film."

And now comes the real praise, which definitely fits in with our opinion! "The expressions, the red popping color, eye makeup… it's giving everything it's supposed to give," praised one fan, while another predicted that the singer will give "the performance of the century." "That Oscar is coming," gushed another fan, while many others applauded her costume, with one fan saying, "She looks gorgeous actually," and another adding, "I love the makeup and costume." "She slayed," said another fan. "I'm honestly very excited! I didn't know how I'd feel about it but I think Gaga really fits as Harley Quinn for this universe. She looks amazing," noted another.
