Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, tells the story of some of Hollywood’s darkest history: the Manson murders. Sure, it’s mostly about two fictional dudes, Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), but they do cross paths with some very real people who became infamously known as the Manson Girls. Shall we investigate how much the actresses of OUATIH look like their real-life counterparts? I think yes.
Squeaky Fromme (Dakota Fanning)
Dakota portrays Lynnette “Squeaky” Fromme, who became a part of the Manson Family after being kicked out of her father’s home. She was never involved in any of the Manson murders, but she did get convicted to a life sentence in 1975 for trying to assassinate President Gerald Ford, so it’s safe to say that she was most definitely not a saint.
Pussycat (Margaret Qualley)
Pussycat may play a vital role in the film, but there was technically no real Manson follower who went by that name. Pussycat is most likely inspired by a few of the women in Manson’s cult...but it’s probably fair to guess that they drew some inspiration from Kathryn “Kitty” Lutesinger, given both cat-inspired names.
Sadie (Mikey Madison)
In the Manson Family, Susan Atkins was known as Sadie Mae Glutz or Sexy Sadie (yes, like the Beatles song—Manson had an obsession with the band). Atkins was one of the murderers, and afterward, she wrote “PIG” on the front door with Sharon Tate’s blood. Um...
Lulu (Victoria Pedretti)
Leslie “Lulu” Van Houten got into drugs as a teenager and became part of the Manson Family from there. She was convicted for her involvement in Leno and Rosemary LaBianca’s murders and is still serving a life sentence.
Gypsy (Lena Dunham)
Catherine “Gypsy” Share was one of the members of the Manson clan who was never directly involved in any of the murders. Just like Fromme, that doesn’t make her innocent—she was convicted for trying to intimidate a witness against testifying, and later, she got sent to prison for armed robbery.
Linda Kasabian (Maya Hawke)
Maya portrays Kasabian, who joined the Manson Family just a few weeks before Sharon’s murder. She went to Sharon’s house but just to act as a lookout. She was also a young mom, and the Manson clan promised her peace and love. Clearly, that didn’t exactly work out. Because of her unique case, she was granted immunity.
Dianne Snake Lake (Sydney Sweeney)
As the youngest member of the Manson clan, Lake met Manson when she was just 14 years old. At the time of the murders, she was 16 and didn’t participate. In an interview with People, Lake said that when she learned of the murders, she was “shocked” and “horrified.”
Patricia Krenwinkel (Madisen Beaty)
Madisen’s character went by many names while she was part of the Manson clan: Big Patty, Yellow, Marnie Reeves, Mary Ann Scott, and even Katie. She actively participated in the murders and was one of Manson’s most devoted followers. Today, she is the longest incarcerated female inmate in the California prison system.
Tex (Austin Butler)
Alright, here’s a bonus. Tex wasn’t technically a Manson Girl, but we can’t not talk about Austin Butler. Charles “Tex” Watson was one of the central members of the Manson Family. He participated in Sharon’s, Leno’s, and Rosemary’s murders, and he’s still serving time. He has apparently denounced Manson and become a minister. Sure, Jan.
