She and Mendes also performed a cover of Parton's song "Islands in the Stream" at the MusiCare Gala earlier in the weekend. Variety got Cyrus to explain how their teaming up came about. She slipped into Mendes's Insta DMs to start the conversation, Cyrus said.

“I actually sent him a DM and said, I don’t know what you’re trying to do next because I’ve actually been in his position in his career too before, where you’re someone who I think is trying to fit into pop music...but you don’t want to be conformist and you want to do your own thing,” Cyrus said. “I love the way that he always kind of plays alternative pop because it’s something that I love to do.”

Cyrus's second performance was a very personal one. During Parton's performance at the show, Cyrus joined Parton to sing her godmother's iconic song "Jolene," along with Maren Morris, during a tribute to the country legend:

K-pop band BTS especially loved Cyrus and Parton's duet:

And after the performance, Cyrus shared her own special tribute to Parton on her social media. "I will always LOVE YOU @dollyparton Your beauty is beyond compare!" Cyrus tweeted.
