After ditching her blonde bob for a sharper black cut, Billie Eilish landed on the 2022 Oscars red carpet with her signature magnetism. Wearing a black off-the-shoulder custom gown by Gucci, the singer took a few moments to smolder for the cameras before entering the Dolby Theatre to perform a rendition of her song “No Time To Die,” from the James Bond film of the same name.

The seven-time Grammy winner is now a mainstay at awards shows, including the Oscars, where she became a meme for her expressive audience reactions back in 2020. But as the musician’s star has ascended since the release of her 2019 debut, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, so has her sense of style—and the discourse surrounding it.

Originally notorious for her neon green hair and oversized punk wardrobe, Eilish opted for a more subdued look around the release of her 2021 album, Happier Than Ever, shocking fans when she dyed her locks Old Hollywood blonde. The cut suited her well when she channeled Marilyn Monroe as a co-chair of the 2021 Met Gala, where she wore two luminous Oscar de la Renta gowns. (The New York Times reported that, as a condition of wearing the brand’s dresses to the Met Gala, Eilish got Oscar de la Renta to agree to stop using real fur in its designs.)

Although the 20-year-old Eilish has since darkened her hair—fret not, her beloved pigtails still make frequent appearances at her live shows—her red carpet style continues to shift. “It’s all about what makes you feel good,” she told British Vogue in 2021. “If you want to get surgery, go get surgery. If you want to wear a dress that somebody thinks that you look too big wearing, f*ck it—if you feel like you look good, you look good.”
