These days, Chris Evans is one of the biggest movie stars in the world. And new talk is swirling that he may soon be returning to his most high-profile role—that of Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But even time-traveling superheroes have to get their start somewhere. And for the now 39-year-old, a successful career in Hollywood began humbly. In his first job, a 16-year-old Chris Evans helped educate students about the natural world.
That's right: There's a pretty decent chance that you and your classmates helped "discover" the Knives Out star. He earned his first credit by appearing in an educational film called Biodiversity: Wild About Life! in 1997. Who knows? You could have been unknowingly watching a future Avenger define the term "ecosystem" during your eighth grade Earth Science class.
The plot of the short is that a group of teens enter an environmental student film contest with a $1,000 cash prize. We never do find out if they won, but this unassuming little clip has a different kind of value for Chris Evans' fans. It's a chance to see a green, fresh-faced version of the Captain America actor helping animals and rocking some seriously '90s fashion.
Some stars may prefer that their early efforts (and bowl haircuts) stay buried in the past, but Evans embraces his roots. He even shared a snippet of Biodiversity: Wild About Life! on Twitter in 2018.
"Here's a clip from my very first professional acting gig," Evans wrote. "Based on my personal style choices, I'm pretty sure the movie was called, 'Asleep at the Wheel'."
He may not be giving his finest performance here, but this short film started Evans on the road to being an internationally famous actor. And it may have inspired him in other ways too. In addition to his political activism, he's also advocated for climate change awareness.
We'll leave you with more of Evans' scenes in the vintage classroom movie:
