The Secret to Choosing an Emerald Cut Engagement Ring Like Jennifer Lopez's
Jennifer Lopez has become something of an engagement ring influencer. First there was her pink diamond from Ben Affleck, which set off a frenzy for colored stones that rippled through the jewelry world. Then, this weekend, a ring from Alex Rodriguez (along with an Instagram engagement announcement with the simple caption "she said yes") may have launched a new craze for emerald-cut diamonds.

J.Lo's is currently the most famous emerald-cut in the world, but she joins a rather dazzling list of brides who've worn the cut, which is a specific and strong choice. Beyonce has an emerald cut engagement ring. So does Amal Clooney. Liz Taylor and Grace Kelly famously wore it too. It has never reached the popularity of the round or princess cut, but it is gaining ground.
"The selection of an emerald cut says a lot about the wearer," says Greg Kwiat, CEO of of Kwiat Diamonds and Fred Leighton. "It’s for a woman who wants something that is different yet classic at the same time. The emerald cut has a regal style, and projects a high degree of confidence. Because emerald cuts are not faceted to be as 'sparkly' as round diamonds and other shapes, it often appeals to a self-assured woman who celebrates understated elegance. Without trying too hard, it simply says everything.”
Sounds tailor fit for Jennifer Lopez, and for the other notable women who have made this choice. Princess Grace wore a 10-carat emerald cut diamond engagement ring from Cartier given to her by Prince Ranier. "With it’s stunning shape and exceptional setting, it may very well have provided inspiration to A-Rod," says Kwiat.
"Elizabeth Taylor wore a 33-carat emerald cut diamond, a gift from her lifelong love Richard Burton. This diamond was much larger and more square in shape than J.Lo’s elongated ring. More recent examples of emerald cut engagement rings are Beyonce’s beauty from Jay-Z and Angelina Jolie’s ring from Brad Pitt.”
The emerald is a true jewelry lover's cut. “They are perceived by some as clearer, purer, and more personally individual than traditional round-shaped, brilliant-cut diamonds," says Jim Haag, managing director at Verdura and Belperron. "Because of their more simple faceting arrangement on top, they allow the wearer a clear look into the 'soul' of the diamond, and choose a stone completely unique to the wearer."
The cut can be tailored to both the diamond and the wearer. "Emerald cuts are considered by some to be a bit more unique than traditional round brilliant cut diamonds as they come in an endless array of shapes and cuts to suit different personalities and tastes," says Haag. "They can be 'swimming pool/tennis court' shaped-more rectangular-or squarish, each with its unique faceting arrangement. Conversely, round brilliant cuts are all cut to similar proportions and do not have these types of variations."
For these reasons, emerald-cut diamonds are not for everybody-they can be unpredictable. "Acquiring an emerald cut diamond takes a good deal of investigating into the various shapes and cuts," says Haag. "Square and rectangular shapes vary in their appropriateness depending upon how elongated women’s fingers appear to be. -what a person likes in a picture might not look right on a woman’s hand."
In other words, a strong jewelry statement for strong women.
