From Town & Country

Good news for fans of the intrepid British detective Endeavour Morse: the drama isn't over yet. The beloved British crime drama Endeavour—itself a prequel to the Inspector Morse series that became a hit across the pond in the '80s and '90s, inspired by the novels of Colin Dexter—has been officially renewed for a seventh and an eighth season, and with the show's return to Masterpiece on PBS just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start thinking about the mysteries ahead.

When will season 7 premiere?

The U.S. run of the latest season is set to debut on August 9, 2020 on PBS Masterpiece. All three episodes of the new season will air on Sundays at 9 p.m. EST.

Who is returning for season 7?

Creator Russell Lewis, who has written all of the previous Endeavour episodes, will once again helm the new season, while stars Shaun Evans and Roger Allam will both return as Endeavour Morse and his mentor, Fred Thursday, respectively. Much of the series's core cast will also be returning, but it appears that Morse's on-again off-again love interest Joan Thursday (played by Sara Vickers) will not be in the season, though Evans indicated to the Radio Times the her character isn't gone for good.

Sadly, Morse's rocking mustache from season 6 will also be missing this season. RIP.

What can we expect from season 7?

It has been confirmed that the next season of the show will be set in 1970 and, as ever, in Oxford.

In the announcement for season 7, Lewis hinted at plans for Endeavour's future, saying, “We’re thrilled ITV has asked #TeamEndeavour to continue to add to the Casebook of Colin Dexter’s immortal creation, and take E. Morse and Oxford’s Finest into a new decade of decimalisation, package holidays, the Oil Crisis, Blackouts, Three Day Weeks, and Europa Endlos.”

Will this be the final season?

Just as season 7 began filing, ITV pre-emptively announced that it would be picking the show up for an eighth season. Prior to that, Lewis had already called out several events that occur after season 7's 1970 cut-off, including Three Day Weeks, a policy that England instituted for a period starting in late 1973 to curtail electricity usage, suggesting that the creator has at least given thought to further-reaching storylines for our storied detective. As for the possibility of seasons beyond the eighth, only time will tell, but as has been the case with many other shows, more Morse may be delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
