A New Trailer for 'The Good Doctor' Season 4 Shows Shaun Treating Coronavirus Patients

From Good Housekeeping

  • The Good Doctor is officially renewed for a fourth season on ABC.

  • Season 4 of The Good Doctor will premiere on Monday, November 2.

  • Actors Nicholas Gonzalez and Jasika Nicole will not be returning.

When season 3 of The Good Doctor wrapped up, there was a lot to unpack.

The hit medical drama concluded with an intense two-part finale that included heroic acts, an unexpected romance, and, unfortunately, a death. Quite a bit has happened in the lives of Dr. Shaun Murphy, Dr. Neil Melendez, and the rest of the St. Bonaventure Hospital staff. Luckily, fans still have a lot to look forward to in season 4.

When is The Good Doctor season 4 premiere?

Season 4 of The Good Doctor is premiering on Monday, November 2 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. The latest installment will feature a two-part premiere with a focus on Shaun treating coronavirus patients. He’ll also be navigating his new relationship with his longtime crush Lea. Ahead of the show’s return, ABC released two trailers (one embedded below and another linked here). After its fall premiere, fans can anticipate a brief hiatus in December followed by a mid-season return at the start of 2021.

Will all of The Good Doctor cast return for season 4?

Sadly, not all of The Good Doctor cast is coming back for the fourth season. As fans know, Melendez died from major internal injuries, marking actor Nicholas Gonzalez’s last appearance as the surgeon. Shortly after the season 3 finale, TVLine also announced that actress Jasika Nicole would not be returning as Dr. Carly Lever.

Not to mention, fans were left on the edge of their seats when Dr. Alex Park (Will Yun Lee) said he planned on moving to Arizona to be closer to his family. What's more, Dr. Morgan Reznick (Fiona Gubelmann) was told that she had ended her career while trying to save a patient’s life.

But the show's creator, David Shore, quickly cleared the air about the future of these two characters.

“Look, I don’t think Dr. Park is going to be leaving. I don’t think Dr. Morgan’s going to be leaving,” he told Deadline. “But there are going to be changes for those characters as a result of things that have happened to them and the experiences they’ve had — in her case a physical change, in his case an emotional change. But there will be changes for both of them.”

At the moment, fans can rest assured that Freddie Highmore, Antonia Thomas, Fiona Gubelmann, Will Yun Lee, Christina Chang, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff, and Paige Spara will all be reprising their roles.

In addition, actress Beau Garrett will return to portray attorney Jessica Preston, according to TVLine (viewers last saw her in season 1). Fans will also get to know “four new doctors vying for surgical resident positions,” who Shaun will supervise. The newcomers include Dr. Olivia Jackson (Summer Brown), Dr. Asher Wolke (Noah Galvin), Dr. Enrique Guerin (Brian Marc), and Dr. Jordan Allen (Bria Samoné).

Are there any Good Doctor season 4 spoilers?

Before the season 4 premiere, David revealed that the show would tackle COVID-19 head- on, according to Deadline.

“It would’ve been so false, I believe, to not deal with it … This has taken over every aspect of our lives for an unbelievable amount of time. The world hopefully will go back to what we viewed as normal, but it just would have been dishonest not to deal with this story,” he said. “Having said that, it is an incredible story. We’re a show about regular people that do heroic things. The impact [of COVID-19] is incredibly dramatic, so we wanted to dramatize it.”

For those wondering if the series will be a reflection of reality, it won't be for too long. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic will only be the focal point for the first two episodes and then the show will pick back up on our favorite characters's storylines.

“On the one hand, we need to deal with it, and do it in an honest but entertaining way. But we’ve been living with this so much for the last six months … I do think we have a responsibility, as entertainers, to provide a little bit of an escape,” David explained. “So, the rest of the season will not be about COVID. It will be returning to the stories that we tell, the stories of life, of ethical choices and these characters in life-or-death [moments].”

While you continue counting down the days, you can catch up on seasons 1, 2, and 3 of The Good Doctor on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.
