Throughout the Scream franchise, longtime fans have always seen Sidney Prescott (played by Neve Campbell) take on the infamous Ghostface in an epic showdown. But, in the new Scream 6, audiences will not see the iconic “final girl” face off with the new killer. Yet, according to the movie’s co-director, it’s better off this way—but why?

Earlier this month, the first trailer for the sixth installment premiered across social media. In the video clip, we see the survivors of Ghostface—Tara (Jenna Ortega), Sam (Melissa Barrera), Chad (Mason Gooding) and Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown)—riding a subway train in New York City. And in a flash, Ghostface targets one of them and tries to finish what they started.

Scream 6 co-directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly and opened up about the new movie. While Gillett acknowledged Campbell will be greatly missed, he said it was actually a good thing that she wasn’t included in the film’s narrative.

“We love Neve, and we're huge fans of Sidney Prescott, but it felt like there's an opportunity to really dig into this new crop of characters, and I think people will be really surprised and pleased with how successfully this movie does that,” he told the publication.

He continued, “This movie's been in our lives now for quite a while, but I think that we are still consistently surprised by how rich and how interesting and deep the relationship is between the four of them in this movie.”

Campbell’s character has been a part of the Scream movies since the very beginning. The 49-year-old actress shocked fans everywhere back in June when she revealed she won’t be returning to the movie franchise. She later told People magazine that she didn’t want to return due to the amount of money she was offered.

Okay, we’ll try to keep an open mind when Scream 6 comes out. But, we’re still going to miss you, Neve.
