It was a particularly crazy news week: the Iowa caucuses were held on Monday, Trump delivered his State of the Union address Tuesday, was acquitted in his Senate trial Wednesday, and to top it all off, seven of the leading Democratic candidates debated in New Hampshire on Friday. Which means that Saturday Night Live had plenty to work with during this week’s Weekend Update segment.

Anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che started by tackling political developments, including Trump’s acquittal and the rambling victory presser that followed it. "The audience for Trump’s speech consisted of his legal team and Republican lawmakers because I guess that circle ain’t gonna jerk itself,” said Che.

Jost hit the reality TV State of the Union noting that, "Trump gave a medal to Rush Limbaugh and celebrated the creation of the Space Force, a moment that was predicted by a Mad Lib I did in 1992."

Cecily Strong stopped by as Cathy Anne, “the lady who screams” outside Che’s window, and offered some commentary on the president's post-impeachment ousters. “This trial is so damn corrupt, Trump’s already going after everybody that did testify,” she said. "He fired that Lt. Col. and his twin brother, who didn’t even have nothing to do with. What they hell do they think, he’s going to Parent Trap himself because he’s so desperate to get back there? That’s like Baby Jessica getting rescued and then turning around and cannonballing back into the well.”

Weekend Update also gave new cast member Chloe Fineman the chance to shine in a segment that looked ahead to Sunday night’s Academy Awards. She pulled off great impressions of Renee Zellweger as Judy Garland, Saoirse Ronan in Little Women, and absolutely killed with her impersonation of Laura Dern.
