Satellite Images Reveal Major Damage at Sudanese Airports
Satellite images published by Maxar Technologies on Monday, April 17, depicted major damage at airports, government buildings, and hospitals in the Sudanese cities of Khartoum, Omdurman, and Merowe amid fighting between two rival military factions.
The first three images, which Maxar said were collected on Monday morning, show at least 14 airplanes destroyed and others damage at Khartoum International Airport. A New York Times analysis of satellite images from both Maxar and Planet Labs concluded that at least 20 planes were destroyed or damaged at the airport. “That includes two aircraft that were burning as of 1:52 local time Monday,” the New York Times said.
The fourth image shows smoke rising in the vicinity of government buildings near the southern end of the airport, and the fifth shows dark smoke northeast of the airport, next to residences and close to a cemetery.
The four images that follow show clear damage at a hospital in the capital, at buildings next to Khartoum airport, at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and at the General Intelligence Service headquarters in central Khartoum. A Sudanese doctors’ group on Monday said at least three hospitals had been damaged as a result of gunfire and shelling, and Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) posted video showing RSF fighters inside the intelligence service’s compound.
The 10th image shows tanks and roadblocks next to the former National Assembly building, located across the Nile from Khartoum in the neighboring city of Omdurman, and the 11th shows military vehicles on a city road northeast of Khartoum airport.
The 12th photo shows dark smoke rising from a high-rise building next to both the Khartoum Railway Authority and the country’s Roads and Bridges Authority.
The 13th image shows burned out trucks at a fuel depot to the west of Khartoum airport.
The final three images show Merowe International Airport, located about 330 km (205 miles) north of Khartoum.
