“I am the ringmaster and the clown!” declared designer Jeremy Scott as he kicked off his circus-inspired Resort show for Moschino in Los Angeles last night. Friends including Anthony Kiedis, Liz Goldwyn, and Gwen Stefani were treated to an extravaganza complete with cotton candy vendors, caged plush tigers, stilt walkers, balloon-animal artists, and plate-spinning clowns before heading to the after-party at Hollywood dive bar Madame Siam. Here, in an underground rabbit warren of rooms riffing on the classic American carnival, guests including Sasha Lane, Ellen von Unwerth, Billy Idol, and China Chow sipped on circus-theme cocktails with names like Step Right Up and Come One, Come All. Other more adventurous partygoers ventured into the invite-only bar-within-the-bar situated behind a tarot-card reader.

Aside from the packed dance floor, where Emma Roberts and January Jones danced the night away, entertainment took the form of a lineup of sideshow amusements overseen by barkers. Alessandra Ambrosio, who had walked the big top tent earlier that evening, tried her luck in the shooting gallery for a prize—in this case, Moschino scarves, sunglasses, and smartphone cases rather than your usual goldfish and stuffed teddy bears—while fellow models (still sporting the show’s Pierrot-style greasepaint) threw Wiffle balls at a hand-painted Kim Jong-un and a cartoon Donald Trump to hoots and cheers. “Politics is a circus right now,” said Scott as the party shifted into high gear. “We need to have some joy.”
