Saoirse Ronan Debuted a Lob at the 2018 Oscars

I've been told time and time again by every hairstylist and makeup artist in the business that for actors, the Oscars is like a wedding. It's not the time to take risks with your hair, makeup, or your ensemble. So if you never wear your hair down, don't wear your hair down. If you never wear red lips, don't all of a sudden break out a crimson tube for the event. It's not a time to take risks or make major beauty changes, but that's exactly what Saoirse Ronan did for the 90th Academy Awards. The actress, who was nominated for Best Actress for her role in Lady Bird, decided to cut her hair.

"I’ve been wanting to cut her hair into a severe bob for a while," hairstylist Adir Abergel tells Allure. "And as you know, based on all the looks we've done over the years, that Saoirse's open to changes." So after a long day getting actresses Kristen Stewart and Stella Maxwell ready for Chanel's dinner party in Los Angeles, Abergel — who has worked with Ronan for the past two years helping to develop her aesthetic — went over to star's house and made the chop.

"I did it the night before because I wanted her to live with it for a bit," says Abergel. "It can be a bit shocking if you do it that day and don’t have time to be part of it and get used to it." Having the night to live with the new short style definitely paid off. "Saoirse loves the cut," says Abergel. "It feels completely like her and it feels young and cool."

For the day of the Oscars, Abergel wanted to show off the new style in all its glory and not add any bells and whistles. But while he didn't add any accessories or braided accents, he did add a few creamy products to keep everything smooth and sleek. After prepping Ronan's hair with Virtue Polish Un-Frizz Cream, he blow-dried it smooth and went over all of her hair the new GHD Gold Flatiron (which made its debut at the Golden Globes back in January) to enhance the shine and emphasize the bluntness of the cut. He then applied Virtue Perfect Ending Split End Serum to her hair with a toothbrush to smooth any flyaways and finished with the Virtue Finale Shaping Spray.

"I wanted to create really beautiful simple, almost ‘90s perfect choppy bob that felt really modern and linear," says Abergel. "With that dress, most people would have gone with a chignon. I wanted to do something that was just as sophisticated but not expected." Well Adir, mission accomplished.
