Samantha Bee offers a fiery apology for 'C-word' debacle

Samantha Bee opened Wednesday’s Full Frontal with an apology for calling Ivanka Trump a “feckless c***.” She had already issued an apology on Twitter, but this apology was much longer and less contrite.

Initially, Bee defended her use of the word saying, “It is a word I have used on the show many times, hoping to reclaim it.” She added, “This time I used it as an insult. I crossed the line. I regret it, and I do apologize for that.”

Bee then apologized to the women she had offended. “Many women have heard that word at the worst moments of their lives,” she said. “A lot of women don’t want that word reclaimed; they want it gone, and I don’t blame them. … I want this show to be honest, and I never intended it to hurt anyone — except Ted Cruz.”

She wasn’t quite as generous when addressing another group, though. “Many men were also offended by my use of the word,” Bee said. “I do not care about that.”

She also regretted hogging the spotlight. “I hate that I did something to contribute to the nightmare of 24-hour news cycles that we’re all white-knuckling through,” Bee said. “I should have known that a potty-mouthed insult would be inherently more interesting … than child immigrant policies.”

In the end, Bee reminded viewers that there may be more important things to worry about than a comedian calling someone a c***. “If you’re worried about the death of civility, don’t sweat it. … I’m really sorry that I said that word, but you know what? Civility is just nice words. Maybe we should all worry a little bit more about the niceness of our actions.”

Full Frontal With Samantha Bee airs Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. on TBS.
