This morning at Salvatore Ferragamo, the ’80s made their first big above-the-neck splash in Milan. The fantastically bold results were a perfect anecdote to an early call time for models Sara Grace, Selena Forrest, and Vittoria Ceretti.

Playing off the soft colors of the collection, makeup artist Fara Homidi created an “Abstract Expressionist eye” meant to mirror the Venetian glass–inspired accessories that came down the runway, from the chunky necklaces to thick hoop earrings. “Ferragamo always has rich colors and textures in its collection, but this season the palette was a bit muted, more pastel—almost in an ’80s woman-of-leisure way,” explained Homidi, dipping her brush into MAC’s Pro Paintstick Palette and administering strokes of brick red, cornflower blue, dusty coral, canary yellow, and white pigments to diffused, color-blocked effect. As a final touch, Homidi dabbed MAC Lipglass over the blocked Murano-ish smatterings for a “Lucite-like” finish.

All this added an idiosyncratic pop to the season’s little white dresses, waist-cinching slate gray trousers, and burnt orange knit matching sets, while the rest of the makeup was minimal—just “natural matte skin slightly warmed up.” The takeaway? A few saturated strokes go a long way to make the ’80s look feel modern.
