Upgrading your mattress is no small feat. Whether you’re shopping for a cheap mattress, taking to sites like Reddit for a deep research dive before buying, or you’re just not sure where to start, this weekend is a great time to check the sleep upgrade off your to-do list. Labor Day mattress sales bring some of the biggest discounts all year. And, as we head into the holiday weekend, there's a wide range of brands offering major deals (we're talking up to $1,350 off).
We recently reviewed a bunch of mattresses in an effort to determine the best for a range of sleep styles, from mattresses that can help alleviate back pain to cooling models for hot sleepers. Tom Price, Associate Commerce Editor here at Popular Mechanics, recommends you do your research before jumping into the mattress search. “Make sure to know your preferences and sizes beforehand,” he says. “If you don’t know where to start in searching for good brands, make sure to check out reviews or articles from trusted sources.”
Once you know the mattress you want, it’s time to find it for less. We searched the internet for the best Labor Day mattress deals and listed them all below, from name brands like Tempur-Pedic to more budget-friendly picks like Allswell. (Note that the prices we listed are for queen sizes.)

When shopping through Popular Mechanics links, you’ll unlock a 20 percent discount at Saatva. The discount applies to your total purchase and has no spending minimum. These exclusive Labor Day savings run from August 15 through September 5.
The Classic Mattress from the luxury brand is one of the most popular hybrid models out there, with both coils and memory foam. Our tester found the mattress helped reduce their back and neck pain after just a few nights. While Saatva mattresses fall on the more expensive end of the spectrum, the brand offers premium services like a full year-long trial period, white glove delivery and setup of your new mattress, and removal of your old mattress.
Tuft and Needle
Take up to 20 percent off a new Tuft and Needle mattress during the brand’s Labor Day deal, plus up to 40 percent off bedding, furniture, and more. We recommend the Mint Mattress, as it came out on top during our testing of the best memory foam mattress. It leans on the firmer side and has excelled edge support, plus gel pads and graphite fibers that will help keep you cool while you sleep.
An affordable mattress brand that measures up to more expensive competitors, Allswell offers bed-in-a-box mattresses in memory foam, classic coil, and hybrid options. The Allswell Luxe mattress is under $550 right now and combines cooling gel memory foam and a spring core to provide a supportive base with a plush top.
While Tempur-Pedic has limited Labor Day seals on its site, there are a handful of mattresses from the brand on sale on Amazon right now. This tall 12-inch mattress will give your bed a luxurious, hotel-like feel. The memory foam mattress claims to help relieve and distribute pressure for a comfortable night's sleep.
Save up to 20 percent off of mattresses, pillows, and bed frames during Casper’s Labor Day sale. The Wave Hybrid Mattress was our pick for the best hybrid after testing. It’s one of the newer models from Casper and features the brand’s new Zoned Support system. Our tester noted they felt the “head of the mattress is firmer, while the middle zone compresses further to cradle your midsection while aiding in spinal alignment.”
Take up to 33 percent off site-wide during Nectar’s Labor Day sale for new customers. Fortunately, the brand’s sale section (which is up to 40 percent off) is also well stocked, and includes the Premium Copper Mattress, which was our pick for best cooling mattress. If you’re a fan of memory foam, you might find this pick on the firm side, but the quilted cover is made with copper fibers that feel cool to the touch—great for hot sleepers.
Purple doesn’t just make mattresses; the brand also makes adjustable bases for its beds. During the Purple Labor Day sale, which has already kicked off, you can save up to $900 when you bundle your new mattress with a base. If you don’t need the base, there’s still a handful of mattresses that are discounted, including our favorite soft mattress, the Purple Restore Hybrid Mattress. While some soft mattresses leave you sunken in and over-heated, this one has a polymer grid that’s designed to keep your body supported and prevent the mattress from sagging, allowing room for airflow.
If you can’t decide just yet if a firm or soft mattress is right for you, you can test out both options with this “flippable” mattress from Layla. One side features a thick layer of plush memory foam for a softer feel while the other side is a thinner, more dense layer of foam for firm support. During Layla’s Labor Day sale, you can take up to $200 off a new mattress, and also save on mattress toppers, pillows, and sheets.
If you’re working with a tight budget, Wayfair is an excellent place to start. The online retailer even has their own mattress line, called Wayfair Sleep. Case in point: The 12-inch Medium Pillow Top Mattress comes in under $400 during this sale. Wayfair says it’s right in the middle between soft and firm, and while we haven’t tested this model first-hand, over 11,000 customers have given it a 5-star review.
When Is Labor Day 2023?
Labor Day is a federal holiday that falls on the first Monday of September. This year, Labor Day lands on Monday, September 4. The three-day weekend has become a major shopping holiday, with noteworthy discounts on big-ticket items like appliances and mattresses.
Is Labor Day a Good Time to Buy a Mattress?
According to Price: “Buying a mattress on Labor Day is a great choice. Many individual brands, as well as larger distributors like Walmart and Amazon, hold sales during Labor Day weekend, so you should be able to find options you like at a discount.” There are already early Labor Day mattress deals weeks before the holiday arrives, and we expect plenty more to land in the coming weeks. Whatever kind of mattress you’re looking for, you should be able to find it for less this month.
Tips for Buying a Mattress on Labor Day
Buying the right mattress is an involved shopping process. Not only is it a financial investment, it can also effect your sleep cycle and, thus, your overall wellbeing. Here are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind as you shop:
Know your preferences ahead of time: “Knowing which size, thickness, and mattress type (foam, hybrid, innerspring) you want before beginning your search significantly cuts down on the time it will take to find the right mattress for you,” says Price.
Consider other retailers: Sometimes, the brand you’re shopping from doesn’t have the best deal. “If you are hunting for a sale, check both larger online marketplaces like Amazon or Walmart as well as the individual sites of brands you love or are interested in,” Price continues.
Do your research: There are plenty of reviews, ratings, and articles from trusted sources you can check out before committing to a mattress purchase. We also recommend making note of the brand’s warranty and return policy, so you can replace the mattress if you aren’t getting a good night’s sleep.
