Stranger Things fans know that season 4 was a difficult time for Max. Grieving her brother’s death pulled Max away from her boyfriend Lucas and their tight-knit friend group. Things took a turn for the worse just as it seemed like Max was getting back to her old self. While there was a visible strain between Max and the rest of the Hawkins crew this season, the relationship the cast shares IRL couldn’t be more different. Sadie Sink, who stars as Max, opened up to W magazine about how she keeps in touch with the rest of the cast when they’re not filming.

“Yeah, we keep in touch all the time,” she said. “I was just on FaceTime with Gaten [Matarazzo] and Caleb [McLaughlin] last night.” According to Sadie, a production pause caused by the COVID-19 pandemic strengthened the bond shared with her costars. “Over quarantine, there would be an occasional text like, ‘Is everyone okay? I hope we get back to work soon!’” she revealed. “After that period of uncertainty, there was an intense appreciation for one another when we reunited on-set.”

Communicating through text and FaceTime isn’t the only way Sadie connects with her castmates. Sadie and ST costar Maya Hawke supported the debut of Gaten’s role in the Broadway play Dear Evan Hansen.

As the ST cast continues to grow closer offscreen, Sadie shared her thoughts on what she thinks will happen to Max in the upcoming season. “A lot is up in the air. But after this whole experience, she’s probably learned a lot about the value of keeping people close in her life,” she told W. “We see a little glimpse of that in episode 9 when she agrees to the movie date. It feels like she’s ready to let people back into her life, heal, and move on from everything. Sadly, that was interrupted. But I would like to see her go further with that and be in a place where she’s fully herself again.”
