Americana has come a long way over the past century—particularly when you cast a nuanced look out west. Recently, we've started to recognize the extent to which black cowboys were erased from Western history, despite the fact that African Americans have long kept and ridden horses—and worn leather fringe and 10-gallon hats. Lately, it seems practically every current supermodel was once—or still is—a horse girl, including not only Kendall Jenner but also Gigi and Bella Hadid, who spent 10 years growing up on a horse ranch. (As recently as three years ago, Bella even planned to compete as an equestrian in the Olympics.) We've also stumbled upon a less obvious—but even more expansive—wild, wild west: social media, whose landscape is peppered with patches of rough terrain, as the Midwestern supermodel Karlie Kloss can attest. Just like her forebears, though, she's been able to navigate tough times by hitching up her trusty cowboy boots, in the same way that Selena Gomez has, both literally and figuratively, been known to duck under the brim of her oversize hat. Saddle up with Gomez and Cowboy Karlie here to round up even more Western inspiration.
