Hilary Duff’s Got a Split Sartorial Personality

On Tuesday, Hilary Duff returned to the music scene following an eight year absence, during which she got married, had a kid, made some movies, then got divorced. The new album, Breathe In, Breathe Out, is titled as such because it’s like a mantra for her. For Duff, it serves as a reminder to “just remember to soak everything in, the good and the bad,” she said on Good Morning America. “We blow through things too fast and don’t appreciate everything. The record is a lot of tough times and a lot of really happy times.” It also plays up her dichotomous life, “the very normal side that is just like everyone else and then who I am as an artist now too.” And it seems her style’s got the same split personality. Performing her new song, Sparks, the 27-year-old wore pop art-inspired rainbow hot pants with fishnet stockings, a plastic yellow belt, and a white button-down shirt. It’s business casual on the top, burlesque dancer on the bottom.

This duplicitous sartorial proclivity seems to be her go-to for onstage outfits. Performing at the KISS 108 concert in mid May, the mom wore yellow satin short shorts with leather trim and gold chain detailing, again paired with nude fishnets. The shorts, which seemed more fit for Madonna than Duff, were paired with a black and white striped T-shirt that every classy French girl has in her closet.

The same could be said for Duff’s music video for Sparks. She’s covered up on top, wearing a long-sleeved black and white number. It’s a shirt that could’ve been picked out of any fashionista’s closet. But the hot pink spandex, on the other hand, are a novelty item, like those specifically made for music video sets. Duff paired hers with a gold chain that seem more fitting for fellow songstress, Nicki Minaj.

Interestingly enough, her every day outfits aren’t as confused. Instead, when Duff isn’t behind the mic, her fashion choices tend to be direct and street style photographer bait. Spotted leaving GMA shortly after taking the stage, she changed into a metallic bomber and distressed jeans.

Sure, setting her style on a single track would simply require a stylist to step in. But it’s the head-butting senses that make it all work. As they say, opposites attract. (Maybe not on Tinder, though…)
