Boost Your Testosterone with This Juice Bar Shot

By Linnea Zielinski

Your date wants you to do shots before you take them out. No, not tequila.

The kind of shot we’re talking about is a little harder to come by but stands to do much more for you in the bedroom. It’s called shilajit.

This natural herb mineral resin may be a newcomer to the U.S. juice bar scene, but it’s an old-school supplement with generations of users. “Shilajit has been used in India and Asia for thousands of years as a dietary supplement and superfood,” says Lori Kenyon Farley, co-founder of NorCal-based Project Juice. And, yes, she confirms, it can help boost your bedroom performance and T levels thanks to its rich zinc and iron content. With a smoky aftertaste reminiscent of barbecue, you might have to chase this zero-calorie shot with a mint before your big date, but it’s well worth the extra step.

To reap the full rewards, though, you better be in it for the long haul — yes, that includes the boost in the bedroom. Men saw significant serum testosterone increases, an average of 23.5%, when they were given 100 mg of shilajit twice daily for 90 days in one Andrologia study. The shilajit content of this juice bar shot: 312.5 mg, enough to hit the study participants’ numbers — if taken daily.

And its benefits aren’t just for the boys. Aptly named “Mineral Surge” at Project Juice, this 2-ounce shot — which will set you back $5 — is packed with 85 trace minerals and fulvic acid, which helps your body absorb all the body-boosting compounds for maximum effect. Dr. Tasneem Bhatia, MD, author of the 21-Day Belly Fix, notes that traditionally, “it’s used primarily for focus, cognition and as a part of an anti-aging regimen.” There’s even hope that it can be used for Alzheimer's prevention, she adds.

But the greatest way this supplement shot may help boost your total health is simply warding off future deficiencies. “Intensive chemical farming and irrigation have removed natural minerals and beneficial microbes from our agricultural land and, as a result, from the plants grown in it,” Kenyon Farley explains. Formed from plants trapped in rock millions of years ago, shilajit provides those hard-to-come-by minerals.

The Bottom Line

As with any vitamins and minerals, whole food should be your first and primary source. A balanced diet can provide plenty of zinc and iron content with a little planning — especially if you reach for these testosterone-boosting foods. But, as Dr. Bhatia notes, juice shots like this can be a supplement, or second strategy, to bolster your healthy diet. If you do pick up the shots, be patient; although the study results are promising, Dr. Bhatia notes it will take at least three weeks of knocking back these shots regularly to see results. But you can always make your daily dose a (healthier) Happy Hour.
