Ryan Reynolds Admits to Wife Blake Lively That He ‘Slid Into Someone's DMs Again'

Ryan Reynolds is not afraid to initiate a potential bromance.

During a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the star admitted that he sparked a friendship with Rob McElhenney's after sliding into his DMs to compliment his fellow actor on an episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Although the 45-year-old confessed it's not everyday behavior for him to be so direct, this particular message would end up being a major one, as the two eventually went on to buy the third oldest professional soccer club in the world, Wrexham A.F.C.—without ever having met one another.

The news, Ryan divulged, received a not-so-warm welcome from wife Blake Lively, seeing as he didn't tell her until the deed was already done.

"After you reached out about this absolutely insane idea," Ryan told Rob (who was hosting) on the show, "I remember seeing Blake and saying, ‘I have bad news and I have really bad news. The bad news is I slipped into someone's DMs again. The really bad news is that I might have bought half of a fifth-tier national football league in Wales.'"

The Free Guy actor jokingly admitted that Lively's reaction to learning of the significant purchase was "not good," adding that they're "still working through that one."

Since the two actors did not meet prior to deciding on their partnership, their very first meeting was captured on film for the duo's upcoming documentary, Welcome to Wrexham, a series that chronicles their entry into the world of soccer club ownership.

"I think the biggest challenge is the community looking around going, ‘What the f**k are these two guys doing here?'" Reynolds noted in the trailer clip, recognizing the challenges they'd soon face as co-owners.

The star also explained the raw truth behind the big move, stating that there was no connection to the club before the acquisition. "It was just a feeling," he said.

Welcome to Wrexham premieres August 24 on FX, with streaming also available on Hulu.
