The British royal family’s Easter celebrations will look a bit different this year as both King Charles III and Princess Kate undergo cancer treatment for their respective conditions.

A Buckingham Palace source confirms to Harper’s Bazaar that the traditional service will be “a smaller scale royal turnout” than that of years prior, as the royals are laying low and focused on their recovery.

The service will take place at St George’s Chapel on Sunday, March 31, and both Charles and Queen Camilla will attend. Other members of the family will be with them, though Prince William and Kate will not make an appearance, Bazaar can confirm.

Kensington Palace had previously stated that Kate would likely be absent from the public eye until after Easter due to her abdominal surgery in January, but following her recent cancer diagnosis—which came after her surgery—a palace insider explains that she will extend her hiatus from public duties until she is recovered.

“The Princess will return to official duties when she is cleared to do so by her medical team,” the source tells Bazaar.

The source continues, “She is in good spirits and is focused on making a full recovery.” As for her husband, Prince William “will continue to balance supporting his wife and family and maintaining his official duties as he has done since the start of the year.”

Kate announced her cancer diagnosis in a personal video last Friday, in which she also revealed that she is being treated with preventative chemotherapy. Charles is also undergoing outpatient treatment for his form of cancer, which he revealed in early February.
