The Royal Wedding Photographer Reveals the Adorable Story Behind Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Candid Portrait
Just call them the Duke and the Duchess of sweetness. Evidently, there was plenty of pressure building up to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding day—an occasion scrutinized not only by the couple’s 600 wedding guests, but also, by millions of spectators from around the world (24 million in the U.S. to be exact). So when the televised portion of the couple’s nuptials was over, the newlyweds understandably felt an overwhelming sense of relief.
Days after the nuptials, key vendors and figures involved in the royal wedding, including the bride’s dress designer, their Most High Reverend, and now, their photographer Alexi Lubomirski, have all spoken out about the newly-minted Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
On Wednesday, May 23, Lubomirski gave a detailed interview about his stunning wedding portraits and how he managed to wrangle all 10 kids in the bridal party to smile for the photos. He also revealed the heartwarming story behind the only photo released of the couple: a black-and-white snapshot of the pair laughing on a set of steps in Windsor Castle. The image brings the royal couple’s aspirational love and warmth to life, similar to the set of photos released from their engagement session at Frogmore House.
“It was just one of those magical moments when you’re a photographer and everything falls into place,” Lubomirski told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. “The sun is setting right just over the top of Windsor Castle just behind them. It was just the most serene, beautiful light. They’re in love, walking around this beautiful garden.”
The public nearly missed the sentimental moment. “I said just, ‘Before you go in, let’s sit down on these stairs,’” he recalled. “And she just slumped in between his legs.”
The moment prompted a real-time reaction from Prince Harry, who grins in the pic while Markle laughs to the side. “They were just laughing because they were joking about how they were exhausted and finally, it was over,” he added. “They just looked at each other and they were just laughing, and it was just this beautiful moment.”
Lubomirski’s goal was to breathe life into the images, which he described to Reuters as “authentic, more loose, a little bit more relatable and real.”
“One word that I really kept throwing around in my head was ‘familial,’” Lubomirski concluded. “Because when we did the engagement pictures and you got the sense that they were together, that black and white picture when they were really embracing and hugging, and you felt that love.”
