The Royal Chef Walked Us Through Prince Harry And Prince William's Very Favorite Recipe—Cottage Pie

Darren McGrady was the personal chef to Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Princess Diana, and Princes William and Harry—a family with notoriously specific food needs—for 15 years. In 1998, he moved to the U.S.A. where he wrote best-selling cookbooks and founded Eating Royally, a fine-dining catering service based in Dallas, TX.

In this limited series, Chef McGrady walks Delish through the royals' favorite recipes from his Dallas test kitchen...while spilling all the most glorious royal tea. We started with Kate Middleton and her sweet tooth. Then we moved on to the Queen and her very rigid eating preferences. Next up? Prince William and Prince Harry.

The past few weeks have given us nothing but chill and normal vibes from the royal family. LOL. L. O. L. Our British favs have been going through quite the tumultuous 2020, which has cumulated in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle effectively leaving the fam to start their own financially independent lives. And while that's all well and good, there's one thing Harry will never be able to separate himself from: his shared childhood with his brother William.

All this is to say, despite the breathless media accounts of a rift between the two princes, Chef McGrady can confirm the boys were, at one point, playful, carefree BFFs. While walking us through their first (and likely still) favorite recipe—"cottage pie"—he notes the princes would oftentimes wander into the palace kitchen for snacks, cooking lessons, and comfort food after a long week away at school. See: Chef teaching Harry to throw pasta at walls to see if it sticks.

At the end of the day, the combination is a deliciously savory shepherd's pie, with well-seasoned meat topped with creamy potatoes and finely chopped veg. You know—the kind of food you want to eat when you are stressed, tired, or just want to feel like a kid again.
