Roundup: Camarillo man dies from gunshot wounds; Simi police arrest man in alleged holdups

Here's a roundup of recent incidents from Ventura County agencies:

Assault turns to homicide after man dies from gunshot wounds

A 19-year-old man died Saturday morning from gunshot wounds he suffered the day before in Camarillo, authorities said.

Garrett Sutton, of Camarillo, was apparently shot around 8:30 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of Fulton Street in Camarillo, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. The agency is contracted by the city of Camarillo for police services.

Deputies responded to calls in the area, first of a disturbance and then about gunshots. They arrived to find evidence of a shooting.

Deputies later learned Sutton had been transported privately to a local hospital and later taken by ambulance to another hospital where he died the following morning, the sheriff's office said. His death is now being investigated as a homicide.

Sheriff's Capt. Greg Gibson said Sunday that no arrests had been made in Sutton's death. He reiterated that investigators believe the incident is isolated and they do not believe there's a threat to the public.

The investigation is ongoing, sheriff's officials said. Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact Sgt. Albert Ramirez at 805-384-4761. Reports may be made anonymously.

Man arrested after holdup outside Simi Valley movie theater

Simi Valley police arrested a 31-year-old North Hills man early Sunday morning after an apparent robbery at gunpoint.

Officers received a report of a hold-up at gunpoint by a man wearing a mask outside a movie theater on Tapo Canyon Road, according to the Simi Valley Police Department. The man allegedly told a woman to give her everything she had, and he left with her cell phone, police said.

With a description of the vehicle, officers were able to find his vehicle on eastbound Highway 118 near Tapo Canyon. He was pulled over and arrested, Simi Valley police said.

Officers later learned of a separate robbery at gunpoint at a 7-Eleven and connected the man arrested earlier to the second crime. Police said both victims' property and evidence of the crime were found in the man's vehicle.

Authorities said Sunday that a BB gun was found in the man's vehicle. The man was booked into Ventura County Jail Sunday on suspicion of two counts of first-degree robbery, according to jail records.
