Rosetta Getty Pre-Fall 2021

For Rosetta Getty, the ’90s were years of personal discovery and growth, when she was transitioning from modeling, most memorably for Azzedine Alaïa, and embarking on her own journey to become a designer in Los Angeles.

Spending so much time home alone during the pandemic in 2020 brought her back to that time of reinvention, and eclectic, style-mixing minimalist separates and vintage finds. “Sometimes, creativity comes from nothingness,” she said, reflecting on the offbeat feeling she wanted to bring to her pre-fall collection, playfully photographed by Bernadette Van-Huy, cofounder of ’90s-era New York conceptual art and fashion collective Bernadette Corp.

Getty also noticed her three teenage daughters had developed a newfound love of the ’90s, especially the jersey miniskirt, men’s wear-style blazer and platform sneaker look. “It works on many different ages,” the designer said. She brought it back, along with minimalist layering — a black scuba-knit bandeau dress over a cashmere turtleneck sweater, for one, and a black bandeau top over a white cotton poplin shirt, for another. It looked great again.

Nodding to American sport, striped ribbed polos and knit dresses (“like something I would wear to go skateboarding,” she said) addressed the reality of at-home dressing, as did a just-polished-enough vermilion, navy and cream houndstooth jacquard blazer and pull-on pants, which looked groovy with Vans platform sneakers. Sailor pants, cropped sweaters and swimsuit separates added to the California resort-ness of this collection, which was especially strong on chic basics.

The designer’s signature tailoring had a new utility, too, as seen on a cool black ramie twill coat with detachable hem, worn over a white shirtdress and black pants, and a zip-front black scuba-knit peplum jacket and culottes easy suit.

Mixing at-home pandemic practicality with optimism that the pandemic cloud will someday lift, she sprinkled in a floral print inspired by a ’70s vintage store find on playful drawstring pants, camp shirts and shirt dresses. “I felt like it was a good time to do a floral…some of the petals are kind of falling and missing.”

For when you’re feeling hopeful but still a little sad.
