How to Rock the Oversize Clothing Trend, According to a Queen

Queen Elizabeth has her brightly colored outfits and umbrella sets. Queen Letizia of Spain rocks a boardroom chic look with panache. And Queen Máxima of the Netherlands repeatedly pushes the fashion envelope with bright colors, bold accessories and on-trend pieces.

Just take the 47-year-old queen’s ensemble during a visit to Breda, Netherlands, today.

Queen Máxima stepped out for a Money Week event wearing oversize camel-colored wide-legged pleated slacks and a mod round-neck red coat. Neither item was tailored close to the queen’s body, but the overall effect was still polished and pulled together. How? It’s all in the details.

To test drive the oversize trend, Queen Máxima opted for solid colors instead of prints, which would be overwhelming. She added dimension and drew the eye up by wearing a tomato red coat instead of one in a muted neutral color. The color combination made her look long and lean despite the oversize items.

Then come the accessories.

An oversize look requires eye-catching jewelry that isn’t so big it’s comical, but not so small that it gets lost. So, the queen donned red coral chandelier earrings, several bright stone rings and a matching bracelet. It was just the subtle pop that her fashion-forward look needed.

The queen was also right on the money as far as footwear goes.

She wore nude patent-leather Salvatore Ferragamo “Lucca” pumps with an off-center bow and a chunky flower-shaped block heel (similar, $595). The shoes matched her pants well enough that they lengthened the appearance of her legs, and the heel detail added an element of varied texture and fun.

So there you have it: When you feel inclined to throw on some oversize items without appearing sloppy, look no further than Queen Máxima of the Netherlands.
